Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture rock wool with stable properties by blending blast furnace slag with a specified component regulating material after which the blend is melted and converted into rock wool by an ordinary method. CONSTITUTION:Blast furnace slag is blended with 5-30wt% ''Shirasu'' (pumiceous sand) and 0-10wt% silica having >=10mm. grain size as component regulating materials so as to regulate the chemical composition of the blended starting material to 38-48wt% SiO2, 10-16wt% Al2O3, 30-40wt% CaO, 3-8wt% MgO and <= 2wt% FeO. The blended material is melted in a melting furnace and converted into rock wool by an ordinary method. The regulating materials are inexpensive and easily available, and they are readily melted when blended with blast furnace slag. The quality of product rock wool can be improved by the materials.
