Abstract

An aggregate for use in concrete or in an asphalt road surfacing composition is formed of grains of devitrified glass containing at least 60% SiO2 and 20% CaO, the balance comprising other oxides as used in glass making and serving as fluxing agents. Part of the CaO may be replaced by an oxide of Be, Mg, Sr, Pb. The composition may be obtained by fusing a mixture of sand, chalk or lime and dolomite or foldspar. The molten glass is devitrified by quenching in water and reheating or by casting and cooling slowly and crushing. The particles may contain cavities depending on the type of melting furnace used. Mineral particles which do not become completley vitrified may be added to the molten glass before discharge. A road surfacing composition may contain:-30% devitrified glass grains; 58% other stone material; 5 1/2 % filler; 6 1/2 % asphalt.
