Abstract
1423025 Amber glass CALUMITE CO 18 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 23789/73 Heading C1M A method of producing amber glass comprises melting a batch of glass making materials containing iron and sulphur, wherein the batch includes a slag which contains sulphur and optionally an iron sulphide compound, wherein substantially all the sulphur in the batch is contained in the slag and the iron sulphide compound, when present, and wherein FeS is formed as a colorant for the glass. The said slag may contain more than 50% by weight of the sulphur in the batch and is preferably a blast furnace slag. The batch may contain sand and the said slag which contains sulphur is present in an amount 200-400 lbs. for each 2000 lbs. of sand. At least a part of the iron present in the batch is contained in an iron-containing slag, e.g. boiler slag. The compositions of slags used in the method are specified and the composition, in percentages by weight, of the amber glass formed is as follows: 71À6% SiO 2 , 1À8% Al 2 O 3 , 0À26% Fe 2 O 3 , 10À3% CaO, 1À7% MgO, 14À1% Na 2 O+ K 2 O, 0À01% MnO, and 0À13% S. Other constituents of the batch may be soda ash, limestone and Fe 2 O 3 and a comparative example (VII) also contains gypsum.
