Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover acetone effectively while recovering methanol without containing sulfur dioxide effectively, by distilling a mixture containing the acetone formed as a by-product in the synthesis of methyl methacrylate from acetone cyanhydrin under alkaline conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A low-boiling mixture, containing acetone, dimethyl ether, methaol, water, methyl acetate, etc., and formed as a by-product in synthesizing methyl methacrylate from acetone cyanhydrin, sulfuric acid and methanol is mixed with an alkali in an equivalent amount of more necessary for neutralizing the acetic acid generated in the hydrolysis of acidic substances and the methyl acetate contained therein, heated and allowed to stand if necessary and then fed to an acetone recovering distillation column, etc. to recover the acetone. In this case, water for extracting methanol is usually fed from the top of the acetone recovering distillation column, and heating steam is fed from the bottom to recover the acetone from the top and substances containing the methaol from the bottom thereof.
