Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a diol by the continuous methanolysis of the acetic ester of the diol, while separating the by-produced methyl acetate efficiently, by feeding the diol ester and methanol continuously to a countercurrent vapor-liquid catalytic reactor.
CONSTITUTION: Acetic ester of 1,4-butanediol or 2-butene-1,4-diol is reacted with methanol in the presence of an acidic or basic catalyst. The liquid diol ester is continuously fed from the middle part of a reaction distillation column, and methanol from the lower part, to carry out a vapor-liquid catalytic reaction countercurrently. 1,4-Butanediol or 2-butene-1,4-diol is continuously produced, while cycling a part of a resulting reaction solution, which contains a diol obtained from the bottom part of the reaction distillation column, and/or a fresh diol to the upper part of the distillation column and separating methyl acetate free from methanol from the top of the column.
