Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide superior pitting corrosion resistance to the surface of an Al alloy contg. Zn by simple operation by immersing the alloy in an aqueous NaOH soln. under specified conditions to carry out etching.
CONSTITUTION: An Al alloy contg. 0.1W1.0wt% Zn is immersed in an aqueous NaOH soln. with 3W20% concn. at ordinary temp. W80°C for 1secW10min to carry out etching. By this treatment an ununiform oxide film on the alloy surface is removed easily and thoroughly. An oxide film formed on the alloy surface after the etching is relatively weak and wholly uniform. Accordingly, the form of the surface corrosion of the Al alloy contg. Zn is perfectly changed to general corrosion type, and the occurrence of pitting corrosion is almost prevented.
