Abstract

PURPOSE:To shorten the response time of display and to obtain excellent contrast, by orienting guest/host liquid crystal, whose dielectric anisotropy is positive at a low frequency and negative at a high frequency, in parallel. CONSTITUTION:Between two glass substrates 1 and 1 having transparent electrodes 2 in a pattern shape, guest/host liquid crystal obtained by adding polychromatic coloring matter to nematic liquid crystal whose dielectric anisotropy is positive at a low frequency and negative at a high frequency is injected. On the substrates 1, thin films of SiO or polyimide are formed and then lapped, so that liquid crystal molecules 6 and coloring matter molecules 7 are oriented nearly in parallel to the substrates 1. Applying a low-frequency bias voltage from a low-frequency power source 4 orients the liquid crystal molecules 6 and coloring matter molecules 7 vertically, so that the color disappears. The application of a high-frequency voltage 5, on the other hand, results in horizonral orientation, thereby bringing out the color. While the low-frequency bias voltage is applied to electrodes X1-X6, high-frequency scanning pulses are supplied to signal electrodes Y1-Y8 synchronously, so that a liquid crystal display device having a short response time and excellent contrast is obtained.
