Abstract

1396828 Modulating light THOMSON-CSF 16 April 1973 [17 April 1972] 18306/73 Addition to 1364274 Heading H4F When an electric field is applied across the thickness of a perpendicularly aligned nematic liquid crystal film, to alter the direction of molecular alignment and the birefringence of the film, the uniform alignment may be lost and a plurality of differently aligned domains produced, each having the same degree of birefringence but different principal directions. Such a film would not be suitable for placing between crossed polarizers for modulating the intensity of monochromatic light or the colour of polychromatic light. In a first method of overcoming such difficulty, #/4 plates or the equivalent thereof are placed between each polarizer and the nematic film and may form the plates bounding the nematic film. In a second method a further continuous constraint is applied to the nematic material to ensure that the alignment remains uniform as the molecular orientation alters. The surfaces of the film may be in contact with surfaces which have been uniformly scratched by rubbing, to an extent insufficient however to influence the initial molecular orientation. Alternatively a magnetic or electric field is imposed parallel with the plane of the film.
