Abstract

1364274 Modulating light THOMSON CSF 6 Aug 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 37172/71 Heading H4F A device for continuously variably modulating the colour of a polychromatic light beam or the intensity of a monochromatic beam in response to an electrical control signal comprises a variably birefringent nematic liquid crystal cell between crossed polarizers, the nematic liquid crystal molecules being uniformly aligned both in the absence and presence of the signal. In a first embodiment, electrodes either side of the nematic layer apply a variable field thereacross to alter the direction alignment of the nematic molecules. To inhibit dynamic scattering, a dielectric layer may overlie one electrode. The electrodes may be shaped and the applied voltage may be variable amplitude D.C. or variable amplitude or frequency A.C. A.C. voltages also inhibit dynamic scattering. The uniform alignment may be imposed by the surfaces bounding the nematic layer so that the long axes lie parallel or approximately at 90 degrees to the plates bounding the layer. The axes should not lie exactly at 90 degrees to the plates. The plates may be scratched to impose a certain alignment direction on the nematic material. In a second embodiment, the plates are separated by piezo-electric transducers which are activated to alter the nematic film thickness or to alter the birefringence of the film via the applied stress. The latter mechanooptical effect is momentary and alternating operation is necessary. A monochromatic beam may be provided by a laser, or by using an interference filter.
