Abstract

PURPOSE:To orient liq. crystal molecules in the stretching direction of a uniaxially stretched polymer film by coating a substrate having an applied electrode with the polymer film. CONSTITUTION:A substrate 1 having an electrically conductive transparent film 2 is coated with a uniaxially stretched polymer film 6 by press bonding, heat press bonding at a suitable temp., adhesion with an adhesive, high frequency adhesion, ultrasonic adhesion or other method. Liq. crystal molecules orient in the stretching direction of the film 6. The film 6 is made of polyvinyl acetate, polyester or the like. Since a polymer film, especially a uniaxially stretched film of iodine-added polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl alcohol has polarizing characteristics, when the film is used, a polarizing plate is made unnecessary. The electrode surface and the glass substrate surface are coated thoroughly, so the liq. crystal does not contact with the electrode, and the penetration of Na<+>, etc. from the glass is prevented.
