Abstract

PURPOSE:To attain the orientation of a liq. crystal suitable for a large-sized display panel having an org. element of amorphous silicon by coating an electrode substrate with a film of a silane compound having a specified org. residue and an alkoxy group and by bringing the liq. crystal into contact with the film. CONSTITUTION:An electrode substrate 41 to be oriented is coated with an orienting agent 42 in a coating process 44, and the coated substrate is passed through a vacuum heating process 45 and preferably through a rubbing process 46 to obtain an oriented substrate 43. By this method the heat treatment can be finished in a short time without applying unnecessary thermal load to the substrate and a functional element formed on the substrate surface. The used orienting agent 42 is a silane compound having an alkoxy group and an org. residue having an F-substituted hydrocarbon residue. It is represented by formulaI (where R1 is alkyl, and n is 1-20), and the compounds of formula II, III are given as examples.
