Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the power consumption and to elongate the life by forming a specified vertically orienting film. CONSTITUTION:A liq. crystal layer is held between 2 electrode substrates. At least 1 kind of trialkoxyorganosilane compound represented by general formula R<1>Si(OR<2>)3 (where R<1> is 12-30C straight chain alkyl and R<2> is 1-4C straight chain alkyl) or by general formula R<3>Si(OR<4>)3 (where R<3> is 3-30C straight chain fluorine-substituted alkyl with fluorine atoms substituted for part or all of the hydrogen atoms and R<4> is straight chain alkyl) is dissolved in a solvent such as water by 0.01-10wt%. The soln. is applied to the surface of at least one of the substrates contacting with the liq. crystal by spraying, roll coating or other method, and it is dried naturally or by heating to 80-180 deg.C. Thus, a film of the organosilane compound is formed on the substrate surface.
