Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture the titled substrate of high quality at a low cost by forming a patterned orienting film on a substrate coated with a member for forming an electrode over the whole surface and patterning the member using the film. CONSTITUTION:The whole surface of a glass substrate 1 is rubbed, a parallel orienting film 3 is formed on the rubbed surface, and on the film 3 an indium oxide coat 2 is formed by a vapor deposition method. After mounting a photomask shown by figure A on the substrate 1, magnesium fluoride is vapor-deposited to form a vertical orienting film 4. This substrate is then immersed in a 50% aqueous HCl soln. at about 50 deg.C for about 1min to remove the exposed part of the coat 2 not covered with the magnesium fluoride. Thus, a substrate for a liq. crystal cell having a patterned orienting film is obtd.
