Abstract

PURPOSE:To orient the molecular axis of a liq. crystal perpendicularly to surfaces of substrates in the vicinity of the surfaces with high reproducibility by applying a composition contg. a silane coupling agent and tetraalkoxy titanate to the substrates holding the liq. crsytal and heat treating the applied composition. CONSTITUTION:A liq. crystal is held between substrates to form a liq. crystal display element. At this time, a composition contg. a mixture of a silane coupling agent having a long chain alkyl group with tetraalkoxy titanate or its polymer is applied to the sides of the substrates contacting with the liq. crystal, and the applied composition is heat treated preferably at >=1,000 deg.C under a humidified condition. The preferred coupling agent is a compound represented by formula 1 (where R1 is 10-24C n-alkyl; R2 is 1-4C alkyl; and R3 is 1-4C alkyl or aryl). The tetraalkoxy titanate or its polymer is represented by formula 2 or 3[where R4 is 2 or 3C alkyl; and (n) is 0-40].
