Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal display element which is superior in transmittance and does not cause any blur in display characters etc. by constituting liquid crystal orientation films by the use of the specific polyimide-siloxane copolymer.
CONSTITUTION: The polyimide-siloxane copolymer having the unit structure expressed by the formulas I, II [Ar1 is phenylene, biphenylene, triphenylene, Ar2 is residual tetracarboxylic acid anhydride groups, Ar3 is alkylene, (substituted) phenylene, substituent is alkyl; Ar4 is alkyl, aryl] is used for the orientation films. The co-condensate precursor of total molar number of 95W50mol% aromatic diamine and 5W50mol% diaminosiloxane and equiv. amount of tetracarboxylic acid anhydride is dissolved in an organic solvent. This soln. is coated on substrates having been formed with transparent electrodes and are heated to undergo cyclopolymerization, after which it is subjected to orientation treatment. The thus formed orientation films will not be deteriorated by heat, moisture, etc. at the subsequent sealing of the liquid crystal cell by organic material or glass, color less, have good transmittance, cause less decrease in creeping resistance and do not cause any blurr.
