Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the thermal stability of orientation and to obtain a display cell with superior durability by forming a polyquinazolone polymer film on the surface of an electrode plate of a liq. crystal display device and orienting the film. CONSTITUTION:A film of polyquinazolone represented by formula I [where R1 is (substituted) phenylene or 1-3C alkylene, and n is a positive integer] or polyquinazolinedione represented by formula II (where R2 is identical with R1, and n is a positive integer) is formed on an electrode substrate. The film is formed by applying a coating soln. prepared by dissolving the intermediate polymer in a solvent such as DMF to the electrode plate and by heating the soln. at 100-300 deg.C to cause dehydration and ring closure. By applying a silane coupling agent to the electrode plate before applying the polymer, the adhesion of the film to the substrate is enhanced. The film is then rubbed. When a liq. crystal display device is assembled using the electrode plate, the device is prevented from being deteriorated even by heating in the sealing of liq. crystal, and it has high durability.
