Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain good quality homogeneous orientation of superior heat resistance and staining resistance by forming the film by hardened continuous polyhydantoin synthetic resin on the substrate surfaces in contact with liquid crystal.
CONSTITUTION: The polyhydantoin synthetic resin having the structural unit of the formula is dissolved in a suitable solvent. Said solution is coated on glass substrates having been selectively deposited with transparent electrodes, and is heated to set for 0.5 to 3 hours at 150 to 200°C. The hardened film is rubbed and this yields homogeneous orientation. This causes the molecular axes of liquid crystal to be oriented parallel to the substrate plane and in the specific direction of the substrate plane even with any liquid crystal materials, thereby enabling the liquid crystal display device of the orientation condition of the liquid crystal material uniform over wide range of the substrates and of stability with time, long life and high characteristics irrespective of operation and non-operation to be obtained.
