Abstract
PURPOSE: To treat sewage efficiently without causing any bulking by a method wherein the sludge concentration in an inflow zone is maintained at an appropriate level by returning a liquid in a main aeration tank to the inflow zone.
CONSTITUTION: In a continuous-type activated sludge treatment of sewage, the sludge inflow is directed into the inflow zone instead of introduced directly into the main aeration tank 6. In this case, part of the liquid in the tank 6 is returned into the inflow zone 5 to maintain the sludge concentration in the zone 5 at an appropriate level. A lower part of the inflow zone 5 is communicated to the main aeration tank 6 through an appropriate opening, and the organic matter load on the sludge is very high in the inflow zone 5 so that the propagation of microorganism (which is a cause of bulking) is inhibited and, therefore, bulking does notoccur. In addition, the organic matter is well adsorbed on the sludge. The returning of the sludge from the tank 6 into the inflow zone 5 constitutes an effective means for maintaining the sludge concentration in the zone 5 at an appropriate level. In returning the sludge, the liquid fed through a liquid feed pipe 8 and air fed through an air feed pipe 9 are mixed and jetted through a nozzle 7. The nozzle 7 of the same construction is used in both the tank 6 and the inflow zone 5.
