Abstract

1348658 Treating sewage UNION OARBIDE CORP 6 July 1971 [7 July 1970 17 May 1971] 31593/71 Heading C1C In an apparatus for oxygenating and ozonating waste water (e.g. municipal sewage) the waste water from line 13 is mixed in compartments 12a-12d of zone 11 with activated sludge from line 15 and oxygen-rich gas from line 14, waste gas is discharged from zone 11 through'line 17, oxygenated liquor is discharged from zone 11 into clarifier 19 to separate sludge from oxygenated water, at least part of the sludge is returned to zone 11, the oxygenated water is treated with ozone and oxygen gas in zone 29 to disinfect or sterilize the water and at least part of the spent gas from zone 29 is passed to zone 11. The ozone and oxygen gas contains 0À5-4% by vol. ozone, the spent gas from zone 29 contains at least 60% by vol. oxygen and the waste gas from zone 11 contains 20-70% by vol. oxygen, the oxygen therein amounting to no more than 40% by vol. oxygen fed to zones 11 and 29. The gas fed from source 25 to ozone generator comprises at least 75% by vol. oxygen. The water and ozone and oxygen gas are mixed for 2À5-20 mins. to dissolve at least 2 parts ozone per 10<SP>6</SP> parts water. The disinfected water contains 10-60 p.p.m. higher dissolved oxygen content than the oxygenated water from the clarifier. Gas direct from source 25 may be used to supplement the spent gas sent to zone 11. In an embodiment (not shown) the sludge from the clarifier may be treated with spent gas from the ozonation zone, prior to being returned to zone 11. The apparatus may comprise means for controlling the amount of ozone produced by the generator in relation to the water flow rate, means for controlling the proportion of ozone in the gas fed to the ozonation zone and means for sensing the dissolved oxygen content in the purified water.
