Abstract
PURPOSE: To accelerate fermentation, to facilitate aerobic fermentation and to reuse fermented material as compost, by adding a very small amount of a nitrogen component to crude material, which contains only a small amount of unstable organic matters, generated by digestion of sewage sludge.
CONSTITUTION: Sewage sludge is digested as disposal of sludge. When the sewage sludge, in which the content of unstable organic matters or an ignition loss is low, is aerobically fermented, the water-retaining rate of the resultant dewatered cake is high. In this regard, additives or circulating matters, e.g. cortex or sawdust, are added to the sludge, however the content of the unstable organic matters is further lowered. In addition, the dewatered cake may be solar-dried or hot air-dried to lower its water-retaining rate, however its ignition loss is reduced. Thus, a component mainly comprising ammonium sulfate or urea is added as a nitrogen source at the weight ratio of 0.1W1.5% to crude material, to be fermented, in which the rate of unstable organic matters is 30mgO2/g or the ignition loss is 30% or lower. In addition, the aerobic fermentation is accelerated by letting air, which is fed into a fermenting vat for aerobic fermentation, contain ammonia gas.
