Abstract

PURPOSE: To stabilize the title treatment and reduce the cost or make the apparatus compact by growing microorganisms consuming grained iron sulfide as a principal nutrient and by treating waste water contg. dithionic acid and polythionic acid with the microorganisms and grained iron sulfide.
CONSTITUTION: Microorganisms such as sulfur oxidizing bacteria are grown with FeS as a principal nutrient and at least one of thiosulfate, thiocyanate and grained sulfur as an auxiliary nutrient under aerobic conditions. The microorganisms and FeS are then stored in a container, and waste water contg. at least one of dithionic acid and polythionic acid is fed into the container to biologically oxidize the acids to sulfuric acid under aerobic conditions while adding at least one of thiosulfate, thiocyanate and grained sulfur as an auxiliary nutrient. After confirming the treatment the amt. of the suxiliary nutrient supplied is reduced by stages.
