Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve treatment capacity for sludge and reuse the sludge as active carbon by adding vegetable waste such as bark to dehydrated sludge then composting the same through piling and fermenting and further carbonizing and activating this.
CONSTITUTION: The raw sludge separated from a settling basin or the like in a sewage treatment plant is fed to a dehydrator, by which it is dehydrated to about 70W80wt% moisture contents. Vegetable waste such as bark is mixed with this dehydrated sludge and the mixture is composted by piling and fermenting. Then this compost is carbonized in the absence of air, after which it is treated with an activating agent such as zinc chloride or phosphoric acid, after which it is carbonized, whereby the active carbon of high adsorptivity is obtd. The resultant active carbon assumes the form of a small piece usually, but it is ground to powder, if necessary, or further it is equally well to mold the powder to granules.
