Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve precise density detection by making a developing bias voltage different between the development of an electromagnetic latent image of an original to be recorded and that of a reference density piece. CONSTITUTION:On the reverse surface of the front end of a platen 1, a reference density piece for toner density control, i.e., a patch part 2 is provided. After a photosensitive drum 5 rotates and is charged uniformly by a charger 4, the image exposure of the patch part 2 and an original M is performed by an exposure device 3 to form electrostatic latent images of the patch part 2 and original M on the surface of the photosensitive drum 5. When they are developed by a developing device 6, a developing bias voltage having the opposite polarity to the latent image charge of the patch part 2 or less than that for the development of an effective image part is applied for the development of the electrostatic latent image of the patch part 2, and a voltage having the same polarity and much lower than the potential of a ground part is applied for the development of the electrostatic latent image of the original M.
