Abstract

PURPOSE: To ferment sewage sludge aerobically to convert into compost by a method in which the temperature of fermentation zone is measured and fermentation gas is circulated, after being dehumidified, to fermentation zone at the upper stage in the treatment of alkaline sewage sludge in a vertical multistage fermentation tank.
CONSTITUTION: In the fermentation of sewage sludge, particularly alkaline sewage sludge, in a vertical multistage fermentation tank 14, the temperature of a fermentation zone 18 is detected by a detector 30 provided in the upper fermentation zone 18, and a flow rate regulating valve 21, a gas extraction mechanism 22, and a circulating gas flow rate regulating valve 27 are controlled according to the temperature detected. When the temperature of upper fermentation zone 18 goes down, fermentation gas extracted from a fermentation zone bed 12 is circulated, after being dehumidified, to the upper fermentation zone 18, whereupon the sewage sludge is neutralized by acidic substances, e.g., carbon dioxide, etc., present in the fermentation gas. Thus, the treatment of sewage sludge by fermentation can be advanced favorably and the sewage sludge can be converted into compost effectively.
