Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the discharge performance and lengthen the preservation time of an alkaline battery, by using a positive active material made of silver-oxide powder which has a bulk density over a given value and a given particle-size distribution. CONSTITUTION:A formed body 2 made of a positive mixture 1 whose main component is siover-oxide powder, is compressed and packed into a positive case 4 together with rings 3. A separator 5, an electrolyte-holding material 6, and a gel-like negative electrode 7 made of a zinc-amalgam powder are placed on the formed body 2, in that order. Next, a sealing plate 8 is placed on the negative electrode 7. At the same time, an insulating gasket 9 is interposed between the positive case 4 and the sealing plate 8 to hermetically seal the battery, and the whole constitutes an alkaline battery. The bulk density of silver-oxide powder used for the positive mixture of such a battery is not less than 1.8. Besides, 80% of the silver-oxide powder has a particle-size distribution of -30-+150 mesh, and the rest of the powder has that of -150 mesh. Such silver-oxide powder can be made from, for example, a water solution of silver ions and a water solution of alkali.
