Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the internal resistance and improve the cold discharge and the heavy-load discharge of an alkaline battery, by using a positive active material made of silver oxide powder whose surface is covered with a metal-silver layer and which has a given bulk-density. CONSTITUTION:A positive mixture 1 made of silver-oxide powder is packed into a positive case 4. A separator 5, an electrolyte-holding material 6 and a gel-like negative electrode 7 made of an amalgam-zinc powder is placed on the positive mixture 1, in that order. A sealing plate 8 is placed on the negative electrode 7. At the same time, an insulating gasket 9 is interposed between the case 4 and the sealing plate 8 to hermetically seal the battery, thus constituting a silver-oxide alkaline battery. The surface of the silver-oxide powder used for the positive active material is reduced to form a metal-silver layer. Besides, the bulk dunsity of the powder is adjusted to 1.8-4.0g/cm<3>. The content of the reduced metal-silver layer is preferred to be 4-10wt% of the silver-oxide powder.
