Abstract

PURPOSE: To considerably reduce solid waste discharged by distilling and decomposing mother liquor after separating sodium hydrogencarbonate by adjusting the calcium chloride concn. of the waste to ≤8% and heat-calcining the waste to enable calcium carbonate to be recycled when the waste is treated.
CONSTITUTION: In the treatment of solid waste in a calcium chloride-contg. slurry discharged by distilling and decomposing mother liquor after separating sodium hydrogencarbonate when soda ash is manufactured by the ammonia soda process, the calcium chloride concn. of the solid waste is adjusted to ≤8%, and the waste is heat-calcined to convert calcium carbonate as a principal component into quick lime, which is then slaked. The resulting slaked lime is recycled to recover ammonia from ammonium salt. As a result, the solid waste is reduced by ≥90% and easily treated.
