Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the amount of sludge by using effectively coagulant by the procedure in which a soluble ferrous salt is used as a coagulant in the treatment of pulp mill waste water by a coagulating sedimentation method and then recovered from formed sludge for reuse.
CONSTITUTION: A soluble ferrous salt, e.g., ferrous sulfate, ferrous chloride, etc., and an alkali, e.g., a hydroxide, carbonate, etc., of Na, K, Ca, etc., are added to the pulp mill waste water for a coagulating sedimentation treatemnt, and then formed sludge is separated from supernatant by a sedimenting separation method. The pH of the sludge is regulated to 4.5W5.5 by the addition of a mineral acid, e.g., sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc., in order to dissolve acid-soluble components. Thus, iron content of the ferrous salt used in the previous process can be recovered in high yield and then reused in coagulating sedimentation treatment. Also, the amount of sludge can be reduced.
