Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the amount of sludge formed by removing arsenic with high efficiency by using a small amount of ferric ion by the procedure in which ferric ion is added to arsenic-containing aqueous solution to form fine precipitates and then an anionic surfactant is added to the solution for flotating separation.
CONSTITUTION: Ferric ion is added in a ferric ion/arsenic ratio of 0.5W3 to an arsenic-containing aqueous solution until the ferric ion is precipitated in the form of ferric hydroxide containing arsenic. After the formation of fine precipitates containing arsenic and iron, an anionic surfactant, e.g., sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, etc., is added to the solution, and then the solution is subjected to a flotating treatment to separate fine precipitates. Thus, arsenic present in solution can be removed with high efficiency and also the amount of sludge formed can be reduced effectively by using a small amount of ferric ion.
