Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure the velocity or rate of flow independently of the roughness of the wall of a water passage and its size, by setting such a partial flow detection position that a formula for converting the partial flow velocity into the mean flow velocity is a function of only a diameter depth ratio which is defined by only the shape of the cross section of the water passage.
CONSTITUTION: Ultrasonic flow velocity detectors 2, 3 are provided on the inside wall of a circular water passage 1 so that the detectors faces each other. The mean flow velocity between points P, Q is detected and applied to a flow velocity converter 4. An ultrasonic water level detector 5 is installed over the water passage to detect the water level in the passage. The detected water level is applied to a water level converter 6. The output signals of the converters 4, 6 are transmitted to a calculator 7, which computes the mean flow velocity on the cross section of the water passage from the mean flow velocity between the points P, Q and the water level multiplies the mean flow velocity on the cross section of the passage by the cross- sectional area of the passage to produce a flow rate signal 8. The partial flow velocity detectors 2, 3 are located at such a depth that the ratio of the mean flow velocity to the partial flow velocity is a linear function of the one-sixth power of the diameter depth ratio.
