Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible automatic measurement of wall thickness continuously and non-contactually irrespective of cold or hot over the entire length of steel pipe by detecting the change in the attenuation quantity of the radiations radiated to the steel pipe.
CONSTITUTION: The radiations from a transmitter 2 are cut off of their greater part by a plate 6 and the fine beam having passed through the pinhole 7 of the plate 6 transmits through a steel pipe 1 and is detected with a detector 8. At this time, the steel pipe 1 is moved in the direction of crossing the radiations at a right angle between the plate 6 and the detector 8 and the intensity of the radiations of this time is measured with the detector 8, by which the relations between the moving distance of the steel pipe and the intensity of the radiations like the curve C are obtained. From the moving distance from the point f1 where the intensity of the transmitted radiations is strongest up to the point g1 where it is weakest or the moving distance from the point g2 up to the point f2, the wall thickness of the steel pipe 1 may be measured.
