Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of flaw detection of weld zones by allowing a probe to follow up and trace the weld zone with high accuracy by making effective use of the parasitic echoes obtained from the shoulder parts of weld beads. CONSTITUTION:The ultrasonic signal from a high voltage pulse generator 2 controlled by a synchronizing signal generator 1 is made incident toward the weld zone 31 of a steel pipe 30 by means of an ultrasonic angle probe 3. Transmission pulses and echo pulses are inputted to a clocking circuit 5 via a sensitivity adjusting circuit 4, and the time intervals of the transmission pulses T and the parasitic echo pulses B reflected by the shoulder parts N of the beads are measured. The measured value thereof and the set value of a setting circuit 11 are compared in a comparator 8, and the probe 3 is controlled to trace the weld line by a controller 9 so that the difference thereof is made zero. On the other hand, in a signal processor 12, the pulses B are gated just before they are inputted whereby the passage of the parasitic echo pulses is blocked, and only the flaw echo pulses F from the weld zone 31 are recorded in a recorder 13.
