Abstract
PURPOSE:To hold the ultrasonic flaw detecting region almost over the entire width of a welded area in a constant way and to increase the accuracy of flaw detection, by using an automatic sensitivity controller to increase the detected prescribed echo with a desired level regardless of the presence or absence of a defect of a subject to be inspected. CONSTITUTION:The ultrasonic pulse signal is applied to a probe 3 for oblique angle of ultrasonic wave, and the transmitting pulse is made incident to a welded part 31 from point M on the outer circumference surface of a steel pipe 30 and reflected at the bead shoulder part N of the opposite side to be converted into the electric signal by the probe 3. The transmitted pulse signal is led to an automatic sensitivity controller 5 along with the defective echo pulse reflected by the defect of the part 31 plus the defective echo pulse reflected from the part N. These pulses are amplified by the controller 5 and supplied to a gate circuit 6. Then the signal with its disturbance echo pulse eliminated is supplied to an A/D converter 7 to convert the time from the transmitted pulse to the echo pulse, the intensity of the defective echo pulse, etc. into the digital data. This data is recorded and displayed to a recorder 8.
