Abstract
An ultrasonic scanner and operating procedure are described. Non destructive probing of a medium is performed by propagating ultrasonic waves through the medium and monitoring recurring echoes reflected off interior discontinuities. The detection sensitivity of the probe is modified in a cyclic manner which is discontinuous or stepwise from one cycle to the next. Thus a spectrum of detection sensitivities is scanned so that discontinuities responsive to a wide range of probe sensitivities are detected.
