Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect whether a defect exists or not, its state and its shape, by providing a pseudo AE wave to a substance to be inspected, from a pseudo AE wave generator, detecting it by a detecting sensor provided on the substance to be inspected, calculating a propagation speed, and comparing it with a data derived in advance. CONSTITUTION:A pseudo AE wave generator (sensor) 1 and AE wave receiving sensors 4 (D1-Dn) are installed to a substance to be inspected 3. The generator 1 receives a pulse of a pulse generator 2, converts it to a mechanical oscillation, and applies a pseudo AE wave signal to the substance 3. An AE wave detected by each channel D1-Dn of the sensor 4 is inputted to a computer 8 through a time difference measuring device 7, and on the other hand, a distance between each channel is set to the computer 8, a propagation speed can be calculated. Depth of the substance to be inspected can be calculated by deriving in advance a data showing the ratio of depth of a defect to plate thickness of a substance to be tested. Also, the direction and dimensions of a defect can be derived by providing the sensors D1, D2 on both the inside and the outside of an area where a plate thickness decrease effect due to the defect exists.
