Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the accurate detection of cracks regardless of any change in the gap by making the gain in the output amplifier of a vortex flaw detecting head with the output of a distance sensor for detecting the size of the gap between the head and the cast iron pipe.
CONSTITUTION: The vortex flaw detecting head 3 incorporates a distance senser 8 composed of a capacity variation detector, a vortex detector or the like to produce a output signal proportional to the size of the gap g between the vortex flaw detecting head 3 and the cast iron pipe 2, which is inputted to a drive voltage generating circuit 9 to be converted voltage to make the gain of the variable gain amplifier 10 variable. Then, the detection output of the vortex flaw detecting head 3 is inputted to the variable gain amplifier 10 to amplify the gain according to the output of the drive voltage generating circuit 9 whereby cracks are detected. With such an arrangment, any variation in the gap in no way affects the results of the measurement.
