Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform surface flaw detection without being influenced by oscillation marks by providing a plurality of differential probe type eddy current detectors in the longitudinal direction of the specimen and in the direction perpendicular thereto, and are oscillated in a diagonal direction at a fixed angle.
CONSTITUTION: A plurality of differential probe type eddy current detectors 2-1W 2-5 are placed on the upper surface of iron piece 1, and detectors 4-1W4-5 are placed on its lower surface. At the same time, two detectors 3-1, 3-2 are placed on the side surface of iron piece 1. Each detector is oscillated in the direction shown by arrow R at an angle of 45°C and thereby surface flaw detection is operated. Consequently, oscillation marks intrinsic to continuous casting slab and various kinds of surface flaws are clearly discriminated, and surface flaws can be detected with high sensitivity without being influenced by oscillation marks.
