Abstract

PURPOSE: Polyphenolic titled composition that contains a brominated bisphenol and a novolak type phenolic resin as the essential components, thus showing flame retardancy by itself, high thermal stability and high mechanical characteristics.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A brominated bisphenol such as tri- or tetrabromobisphenol-A and (B) a novolak type phenolic resin such as condensate of formaldehyde with phenol are mixed by melting them with heat, so that the bromine content of the mixture becomes 5W30wt%. Further, the mixture is combined with an epoxy resin such as bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether or a curing agent such as an imidazole to give an epoxy resin curable composition. When necessary, a filler such as asphalten, a coloring agent such as a dye, a diluent and a modifier are added and used as flame- retardant coating or laminate materials.
