Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the life of a laser and easily obtain the single lateral mode from the laser by mounting dielectric capable of altering refractive index at the laser oscillator to alter the refractive index to control the laser oscillation output, oscillation wavelength and the like. CONSTITUTION:A dielectric 4 having variable refractive index made of semiconductor laser or the like is provided at both or one of the output terminals 2 and 3 of a laser oscillator 1 made of semiconductor laser. The oscillator is thus formed to alter the refractive index of the dielectric 4 with electro-optical effect and magneto- optical effect so as to control the laser oscillation output or oscillation wavelength. When two dielectrics 4 are employed to be interposed at the oscillator 1 therebetween or the dielectric 4 is interposed with two oscillators 1, the oscillating portion is reduced to enable single lateral mode. In this manner, the laser oscillation can be simply controlled.
