Abstract
PURPOSE: A quenched tempered glass container, having stable practical strengths, and prepared by molding a glass container having a specified wall thickness range on the body part thereof, quenching and tempering the molded material, and forming a layer of higher compression stress on the inner surface of the body part than that of the outer surface.
CONSTITUTION: A glass container is molded to give an average glass wall thickness value (X) in the body part of 1.7W3.8mm, the maximum glass wall thickness value in the range expressed by formula I and the minimum glass wall thickness value in the range expressed by formula II. The resultant molded glass container is then quenched in a temperature range of about 0W150°C below the deformation point of the glass at a cooling rate of about 20W30°C/sec by adjusting the velocity of a fluid, e.g. air. Thus, a compression stress layer on the outer surface and a compression stress layer having a higher stress value on the inner surface than that of the outer surface thus formed provide improved practical strengths such as improved scuff resistance, synergistically enhanced internal pressure strength and impact strength in the quenched tempered glass container.
