Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture an alloy magnet at a low temp. under a low extrusion pressure by hardening an Mn-Al alloy having a specified composition contg. Ga and by carrying out warm plastic working optionally after tempering.
CONSTITUTION: An alloy consisting of 66W75wt% Mn, 0.2W3.5wt% Ga and the balance essentially Al is provided with homogeneous ε phase by soln. heat treatment and hardened at ≥about 200°C/min cooling rate. By the hardening the alloy is transformed to τ phase and shows ferromagnetism. The alloy is optionally tempered at ≤about 800°C to finish perfect transformation to τ phase, and it is subjected to warm plastic working at 300W800°C such as extrusion to manufacture an alloy magnet. By this method the alloy magnet can be provided with the same magnetic characteristics as a conventional Mn-Al-C alloy magnet at a lower temp. or under a lower extrusion pressure.
