Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture a steel having excellent surface hardening characteristic without the need for pretreatments by a method in which a steel containing C, Si, Mn, N and one or more of V, Nb, Ti is hot-rolled and then cooled under a condition that a ferrite-pearlite structure containing a ferrite having a specific volumetric ratio is produced.
CONSTITUTION: A steel, contianing 0.30W0.60% C, 0.10W1.0% Si, 0.20W1.70% Mn, 0.005W0.020% N and one or more of 0.50% or less Nb, 0.50% or less V, 0.50% or less Ti, is hot-rolled into a bar, for example, and then cooled while controlling the cooling rate in such a way as to form a micro structure consisting of a ferrite-pearite structure containing ferrite having a volumetric ratio of 25% or less after the rolling. Thus, a steel for hardening by high frequency, having high surface and central hardnesses and excellent effective hardness penetration, can be obtained only by regulating the cooling rate after the rolling without the need for specific pretreatments.
