Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain p-xylene in high purity and yield, by washing p-xylene crystal separated by fractional crystallization with specific inert washing liquid, and heating and melting the washed crystal to effect the separation of the washing liquid by precipitation separation.
CONSTITUTION: p-Xylene (PX) crystallized from hydrocarbon mixture by cooling is separated by a centrifugal separator. An inert washing liquid is introduced into the separator during the separation, and the drained PX crystal is washed with the liquid to remove the most part of the mother liquid. The crystal is taken out of the separator, molten by heating, and separated into PX and the washing liquid by precipitation separation. The inert washing liquid should be immiscible with the xylene mother liquid, and have a freezing point of ≤0°C, and a specific gravity different from that of the xylene mother liquid at the operation temperature to an extent to enable the liquid-liquid precipitation separation. Pref. examples of the washing liquid are, ammonia water, aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, cuprammonium solution, etc.
