Abstract

PURPOSE: In separating and purifying crystal of p-xylene from a slurry of p-xylene, to effect it only by a simple distillation operation, and to save energy consumption and an inital cost, by using liquid carbon dioxide as a detergent.
CONSTITUTION: In separating p-xylene crystal from a mother liquor of xylene by a centrifugal separator from a slurry of p-xylene which is obtained by cooling a mixed hydrocarbon solution containing p-xylene so that p-xylene is crystallized, liquid carbon dioxide which is readily treatable and has boiling point extremely different from that of p-xylene, as a detergent, is introduced to a centrifugal separator. The p-xylene crystal from which the liquid is remoed by centrifuging is washed, most of the mother liquor of xylene attached to p-xylene is removed and p-xylene crystal is taken out. It is molten under heating and simultaneously liquid carbon dioxide is vaporized, so that p-xylene is separated from carbon dioxide. The separation and purification can be carried out by simple heating and only by a distillation operation of a device to be changed to a reduced pressure readily.
