Abstract
PURPOSE: To separate high purity methacrylic acid, in high efficiency, from an aqueous solution of methacrylic acid containing the by-products of gase-phase catalytic oxidation, by providing a process for the pretreatment with a hydrophobic organic solvent, thereby conveniently removing the scum which is to be generated in the subsequent extraction process.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of the reaction product containing methacrylic acid and obtained by the gase-phase catalystic oxidation, is introduced through the line 1 to the mixing vessel 2, and a hydrophobic organic solvent is introduced from the separator 4 to the mixing vessel 2 through the line 5. Both materials are mixed in the vessel to produce scum of the side products, e.g. polymers. The mixed solu- tion is transferred to the separator 4 through the line 3 and separated into an organic layer comprising mainly the hydrophobic roganic solvent and an aqueous layer. A part of the organic layer is circulated to the mixing vessel through the line 5. A filter 6 is inserted in the line 5 to remove the scum. The aqueous layer at the bottom of the separator is introduced to the extraction tower through the line 7 to separate the high purity methacrylic acid.
EFFECT: Continuous extraction is possible for a long time.
