Abstract

PURPOSE: Acidic impurities in an aqueous slurry of naphthoquinone and phthalic acid that results from the catatlytic oxidation of naphthalene in vapor phase are neutralized, then the slurry is heated to dissolve the phthalic acid and the naphthoquinone is separated by extraction, thereby separating them into each component.
CONSTITUTION: A gas containing the reaction products from the catalytic oxidation of naphtalene in gas phase is brought into contact with an aqueous medium to catch the products as a slurry. Then the acid components in the slurry as sulfuric acid and maleic acid are neutralized with sodium hydroxide and the slurry is heated to dissolve the phthalic acid and the remaining naphthoquinone is extracted with a water- insoluble solvent. The aqueous layer is cooled to precipitate and separate the phthalic aicd. The aqueous medium can be recylcled for capturing the gaseous oxidation products.
EFFECT: The amount of the base for neutralizing the reaction product can be reduced and the decomposition and deterioration of the naphthoquinone can be prevented.
