Abstract

PURPOSE: To purify butylene oxide, economically, by extracting the azeotropic mixture of water and butylene oxide from the middle stage of the first distillation column as side stream, cooling the azeotropic mixture to separate and remove water thereform, refluxing the mixture to the first distillation column, removing low-boiling components from the top of the column, and fractionating the component obtained from the bottom of the column.
CONSTITUTION: Crude butylene oxide is supplied through the pipe 11 to the middle stage of the first distillation column 12, and the azeotropic mixture of butylene oxide and water is extracted from the side stream stage of the column 12. The mixture is cooled with a cooler 14, and separated into two layers in a decanter 15. The oil layer is refluxed to the column 12 through the pipe 16, and the water layer is discharged from the system through the pipe 17. The low-boiling components in the supplied liquid is concentrated to the top stage of the column, and taken out of the system through the pipe 13. The component obtained from the bottom of the column is fed to the second distillation column 19 through the pipe 18, and fractionated. The high-boiling components are discharged from the bottm of the second column 19 through the pipe 21, and the purified butylene oxide is extracted from the top of the column 19 through the pipe 20. The purified butylene oxide can be obtained by this process, easily, economically, in high purity and yield.
