Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate and purify p-xylene, easily, by washing p-xylene crystal separated by the fractional crystallization with liquid 2C or 3C hydrocarbon, and melting the washed crystal thereby evaporating and separating the washing liquid.
CONSTITUTION: p-Xylene (PX) is crystallized from a hydrocarbon mixture by cooling, and separated by a centrifugal separator. Liquid 2C or 3C hydrocarbon or their mixture is introduced during the separation into the centrifugal separator as washing liquid, to remove the most part of the mother liquid attached to the drained PX crystal. The crystal is taken out of the separator, molten, and further heated to evaporate and separate the washing liquid from PX taking advantage of the large boiling point difference between them. The washing liquid, e.g. ethylene (b.p.: -72°C), propane (b.p.:-45°C), etc., is sprayed through a nozzle into the separator, and after evaporation and separation, compressed and liquefied, and used again as the washing liquid or as a refrigerant for the preparation of PX slurry, etc.
