Abstract
1319870 Crystallizing from a melt MONSANTO CO 16 Nov 1971 [17 Nov 1970] 53129/71 Heading BIG An organic compound having a melting point above 0‹C at one atmosphere is separated from a molten mixture having zero or low solubility in water and in which the compound is present with one or more organic compounds, by crystallizing the compound from the melt in the presence of water, and separating crystals of the compound from the melt liquor. A minor amount of a caustic compound may be present during crystallization. The mixture is preferably a mixture of isomers, e.g. a mixture of nitrochlorobenzenes from which p-nitrochlorobenzene is separated. The crystallisation is effected by feeding the molten mixture into a crystallizer containing water and the caustic compound, to a level just above a stirrer, withdrawing the slurry and separating the crystals by a centrifuge. The crystallizer and centrifuge are maintained at an elevated temperature to prevent solidification of the melt.
