Abstract
1407305 Concentrating solutions KRAUSSMAFFEI AG 4 Jan 1973 [1 Feb 1972] 624/73 Heading B1G Solutions are freeze concentrated by subdividing the solution into two parts, cooling one part until it is solid and breaking down the solid to fine granules, cooling the second part to the freezing point of the solution or just a little above, mixing with agitation the two parts until the granules have dissolved, separating off e.g. by centrifuging, the solvent crystals formed and recovering the solution concentrated. If desired the solution to be concentrated may be cooled to the freezing point or just above before division. As shown in the flow diagram, in heat exchanger 1, the solution is cooled only to the temperature where non-crystallization of solvent occurs. Part of this solution is further cooled on a cooling roller 2 until it is solidified after which it is comminuted to fine granules. In mixing device 3, the granulated particles and precooled solution are mixed until the particles dissolve. During dissolution, crystals of pure solvent form and these are separated from the solution in centrifuge 4, and the concentrate removed via pipe 5. The solvent crystals are removed through pipe 6 and conveyed by pipe 8 to device 3 where they function as seed crystals. Alternatively the crystals may be conveyed via pipe 7 to the centrifuge 4, where in the melted state they are used as a wash liquid. In two other modifications not shown the above arrangement is in one case combined with a similar arrangement and in the other case with another type of scraping cooler crystallizer for further concentrating the solution. The specification also includes a flow diagram, which includes temperatures and concentrations, for concentrating citrus juice.
